Seeds – Gratitude Rant #7

We planted some seeds tonight.

I know it’s Fall, and I just barely finished getting the garden all tilled up and tucked in and ready for Winter, but sometimes I just can’t help myself. Continue reading “Seeds – Gratitude Rant #7”

Knife Time – Gratitude Rant #6

Dinner was over. The dishes were done. I’d just finished reading no less than 18 consecutive children’s books to my 3 year old. And now what was I doing?

I was opening up the fridge — not for a midnight snack, but rather, to pull out the pot full of pheasant carcasses that needed cleaning, cutting, and bagging.

And for the next 45 minutes, I got in some nice, relaxing “knife time”. Continue reading “Knife Time – Gratitude Rant #6”

So… I love raising pigs.

We’ve only had them for a couple months now, but we’ve already had so much fun with them that I’m thinking I might have to make pigs a permanent fixture on the old homestead — raising a few every year, just because they’re just so much fun!

I love their bright eyes, their bristly chins, and their wobbly jowls.

I love their inquisitive nature and their skittish little explosions.

It’s extremely satisfying to watch them snortin’ and rootin’ around the pigpen. And it’s incredible to see how fast they grow! I’m usually out there 2 or 3 times a day, and I swear it seems like they get bigger every time I see them.

But by far, my favorite thing about those weaner pigs is watching them eat. Continue reading “Smooshed Donuts & Stale Cereal – Gratitude Rant #5”

Raindrops – Gratitude Rant #4

Sundays get pretty busy this time of year. With the holidays fast approaching and year-end financial data coming due, it isn’t uncommon for me to leave the house for church meetings at 6 o’clock in the morning — and stay there, sometimes until later than 9 o’clock at night.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve, but it does definitely take it out of you, especially for an antisocial hermit like me. Continue reading “Raindrops – Gratitude Rant #4”

Wrenching – Gratitude Rant #2

IMG_4254.JPG

So… for the past 2 weeks, our water heater has been leaking.

For the past 2 days, it’s been totally shut off.

The joys of home-ownership, right?

It started out as just a slow, small leak — nothing a few rags and a box fan couldn’t clean up. But due to some procrastination on my part, and some red tape regarding the manufacturer’s warranty, time kinda slipped away from us, and the leak just got bigger and bigger.

A couple days ago, it got so bad, we finally ended up just shutting the hot water off entirely.

So for 2 days now, we’ve been enjoying cold showers — and we’ve been heating water on the stovetop in order to wash the dishes. Continue reading “Wrenching – Gratitude Rant #2”

Blogging – Gratitude Rant #1

It was cold and drizzly when I woke up this morning. A sharp wind was moaning in the darkness. I could hear the raindrops pitter-pattering against the windows.

I let out a sigh and rolled over in bed.

All in all, it was just one of those dark, cold mornings when all you want to do is pull the covers up over your head and forget about the looming workday.

And I’ll admit, I was about to do just that — but then a little thought popped into my head:

Today is November 1st!

Today is the day I start my Gratitude Rants! Continue reading “Blogging – Gratitude Rant #1”
