The Pegboard – Gratitude Rant #13

So, I’ve got a pretty sweet job. It’s challenging. It’s exciting. It’s rewarding. (Most days, anyway). And I work with some pretty great people too.

All in all, I’ve got a lot to be grateful for when it comes to my employment.

But y’know, I (like everybody) still have to deal with Mondays

Seriously, does anybody like ’em?

I don’t care who you are or how great your job is, it’s ALWAYS rough getting yourself back into the daily grind after a nice weekend.

It helps, though, if you have something fun to look forward to at work — and that’s where the Pegboard comes in…

Roughly 6 months ago, our team ordered and mounted a pegboard on one of the walls in our office. It’s just a simple thing, really. Nothing more than a big board with some holes drilled in it. (And a couple of wooden dowels for climbing). But MAN! It is so much fun!

As a software developer, I spend a lot of time sittin’ around, staring at a computer screen. Not a whole lot of physical activity. (Unless, of course, you consider banging your head against a keyboard to be a form of exercise). And quite often (especially on Mondays) I find myself feeling totally and completely drained of all brain power — like I’ve got absolutely nothing else left to give.

It’s times like those that make me grateful for that pegboard.

It gives me a chance to get out of my seat, take a quick shot of adrenaline and physical exertion, and then come back and tackle the problem with a fresh mind.

Like I said, I’ve got a lot to be thankful for with my job — but today I’m especially grateful for the Pegboard.
