Winter is here! (sort of…)
For about a week now, I’ve been keeping a close eye on the weather forecasts — and they’ve all been calling for snow. Quite a bit of snow, actually. That’s why I was so keen to finish tilling the garden a couple days ago.
When the snowflakes started swirling last night, I was really gearing up for a good little snowstorm — but unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be.
Not at the One Acre Lott, anyway…
I woke up early this morning and headed out to take care of chores, and I was greeted by a bitter north wind — cold enough to numb the fingers and bring tears to your eyes, but NO SNOW.
I couldn’t help but feel just a little disappointed, almost like I’d been cheated. I mean, I put in all that work battening down the hatches and getting things ready for the big storm, and I was really looking forward to the beautiful, clean feeling that snow brings. But we totally got gypped!
My disappointment quickly got turned on its head, however, during my bus ride into town…
The bus had only been driving for about 5 minutes when, quite suddenly, we plunged into a real winter wonderland!
Apparently the storm had missed our house by a mere 5 or 10 miles — everywhere else got a beautiful little dusting of snow!
I tell ya, it totally made my day!
I think I’ve mentioned it before, but winter is quickly becoming one of my favorite seasons, because, not only is everything beautiful and crisp and bright — but it also gives us a chance to kind of catch our breath and finally rest from all the work and busy-ness of spring/summer/fall.
It gives us a chance to settle down, engage in a little bit of introspection, and dream about the possibilities for the coming year (and of course, eat a bunch of good food that we’ve worked so hard “putting up” during the past few months).
Whichever way you look at it, I sure am grateful for the snow!
